The St. Luke Habitat for Humanity Ministry partners with Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio (HFHSA) which is an ecumenical Christian non-profit housing organization. We work in partnership with God's people in need, to build simple, decent and affordable houses without interest or profit. We work with very low-income families whose typical earnings per household are between $1100-$2833 per month. Household size and other factors apply. Families are accepted to the Habitat program based on their need, ability to pay a 0% interest mortgage, and their willingness to partner. Applicants must be permanent residents of Bexar County with proof of social security number. They must be a first time home buyer or not have owned a home within the past three years.
Families must spend a minimum of 300 hours investing in "sweat equity" where they support and help build their own house and that of their neighbors. Monthly mortgage payments average $400-$450 which includes tax and insurance. The St. Luke Habitat ministry was started in 2000 and since then we have helped sponsor and build six houses. Construction of St. Luke's seventh started on February 29, 2008. This has changed the lives of 26 people including 18 children.
To be a sponsor, funds must be raised ($50,000 in 2008) and volunteers must be provided for- construction, - food for workers and - telephone operators to remind workers of their workdays. Prayers by the community are the most important part of the success of each year’s sponsorship and build. St. Luke parishioners have been very generous in offering their time, treasures, and talents to this ministry. You may refer any questions or comments to Homer or Sue Fetzer @434-5475.
